Car Donation Charities: It's a Personal Choice

There are many charities which accept used vehicles and provide the donor with a tax deduction.  If you are considering donating a car, the decision as to your selection of which of the many car donation charities is a personal choice.  There is no better feeling than giving to those in need, and being able to give to a charity that has meaning to you only adds to the joy.  If you anticipate deducting the donation on your taxes, make sure you give to a Section 501(c)(3) organization.  A Section 501(c)(3) is the most common type of qualified organization.  You can verify the charity is legally permitted to accept donations and provide a receipt for tax purposes through IRS Publication 78.  Some religious organizations are not required to register with the IRS, but are still permitted to accept donations and allow your deduction at tax time.

Since there are many organizations or companies who accept vehicle donations, it allows you to select a specific cause.  The range of services the charities provide includes educational, religious, medical and specific groups of people such as military veterans.  Some of the charities are well known and accept other types of donations as well.  Unfortunately there are scams which exist so be sure you work with a reputable organization.

Goodwill is thought of to most people as a store where you can buy used merchandise.  This is true, but Goodwill is a charity that helps people with specialized needs prepare and train for jobs that will be help people start their career.  Some of the groups who are helped by the Goodwill are people with disabilities, senior citizens, immigrants, veterans, youth and even people with criminal backgrounds.  A Goodwill in the community is a definite asset as they help others who may be otherwise unable to learn the skills to get jobs.

Purple Heart is an organization designed to help support our troops.  This organization has been helping military veterans for over 75 years.  There are growing numbers of military veterans each year, and especially with recent needs for troops to be deployed and the military services being a career choice for many young people, there will be many more.  This foundation helps veterans with many forms of assistance from filing various compensation forms to assistance in locating and helping homeless veterans.  Purple Heart also helps families of veterans.

The Salvation Army is an organization that possesses religious beliefs.  It is very well known for the bell ringers at the kettles during the Christmas season.  The Salvation Army works with churches of all denominations within communities to help meet their needs.  It also helps both the spiritual and physical sides of those in need on an individual basis as well.  The Salvation Army has churches, stores and programs to service the community residents, and they rely heavily on donation to fund many free programs for people in need of help.

These are just a few charities which provide much needed services.  If you would like to research car donation charities, use the IRS information and be aware of fraudulent groups.  If you do not feel comfortable with the charity, ask questions and seek out online websites or opinions of others who have donated.  The process can be win-win for both the charity and the individual donating the car.
